On Saturday, February 9th Daily Acts hosted a community workday at the Cavanagh Recreation Center that was focused on repairing and leveling a platform for the existing rain tanks. A good turnout of community volunteers and Sonoma State students allowed for additional garden maintenance to be part of this workday as well. The day began with an opening circle and tour of the Cavanagh center. Daily Acts staff, Liz Platte-Bermeo, led volunteers throughout the site and discussed partnership between Daily Acts, the City of Petaluma, and a lot of volunteers to create and maintain this educational site. During the tour different tasks were highlighted including repair of the rain tank platform, excavation and shaping of swales, and weeding and pruning.

Attendees broke into groups depending on their interests. From 10am – 1pm, volunteers worked diligently to accomplish their group goals. The outcome included creating a stable and level platform for the existing rain tanks, reconnecting the tanks to the gutter, excavating the adjacent rain garden and swales to allow for overflow to infiltrate throughout the landscape, and pruning larger plants to promote plant health.
