Island Alum Root, also known as Heuchera maxima is a perennial plant native to the Channel Islands that grows best in full sun in coastal gardens or under shade when growing inland. It’s bright green foliage grows up to 1.5 feet high and it’s cream to pink colored flowers can reach up to 3 feet high, attracting many hummingbirds. It prefers sandy or rocky soil with good drainage, and after getting established, can tolerate periods of drought during summer.

Fun fact: The roots can be used in the natural dyeing process as a mordant to substitute store-bought alum.
