In the heart of The Atlantic Rainforest, yerba mate is being grown with care and equilibrium in mind. The Fundacion Moises Bertoni (FMB) is a nonprofit in the area that fights for conservation and sustainability, and maintains the Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayu (Mbaracayu Natural Reserve) that supports biodiversity and a strong community foundation.
The reserve is not only a place for yerba mate to be produced, but also a place for locals to work. Fair wages for producers provide security, and the school for girls on the reserve gives young people a step in the right direction towards their education.
The production of yerba mate supports the reserve. FMB and Guakayi worked together to harvest yerba mate for the first time in this part of Northeastern Paraguay in 2020, again in 2021, and will continue each year.
Outside of the reserve is the buffer zone, which surrounds the area, and homes 33,000 people. FMB and Guayaki fight to preserve this part of the Atlantic Forest through the production of yerba mate and a flow of resources to support the growing community. FMB and Guayaki continue working together towards sustainable sourcing practices, protecting biodiversity, fair working conditions, and the production of high-quality yerba mate.
Thank you, Guayaki, for leading with your values! We are so proud of your commitment to conservation and environmental justice.
