In February, new Windsor homeowners Josh and Alison were selected to host a lawn conversion workshop hosted by Daily Acts and the Town of Windsor. Residential landscape transformations spread water-saving solutions through hands-on education and skill-building. This lawn conversion effort occurred over the course of 2 days and engaged 12 volunteers.
In preparation for the sheet mulching workshop, Daily Acts staff gathered in Josh and Alison’s front lawn to identify, cap, and convert sprinkler heads in order to prepare for drip irrigation.
On Saturday, February 25th 2023 Daily Acts staff gathered volunteers to lead a workshop on sheet mulching. While learning what it means to “compost in place,” volunteers spread layers of compost, cardboard, and mulch over their once water-intensive lawn. When the layering was complete, participants noted their surprise in the ease of this process.
On Saturday, April 29th 2023, Daily Acts returned to the site to complete the job that began over two months prior. Arriving with a plant and irrigation design, a truckload of native, low-water use plants, tools, and lots of bagels, Daily Acts convened with volunteers to plant a water-wise garden. Beginning with a proper planting demonstration, volunteers planted over 200 plants including Yarrow, Santa Barbara Daisy, Creeping Thyme, Deer Grass, Penstemon, and many more species of low-water use plants. After a break for lunch, participants gathered to learn about drip irrigation. With 1/2 inch inline drip and blank line, the crew laid enough line to efficiently water each plant. At the end of the day, DAO staff and participants gathered to appreciate each other’s efforts and the 15,000 annual gallons saved through their work!
