Daily Acts is pleased to be working on a county-funded grant project focused on increasing carbon sequestration through the application of compost on multiple properties in community settings while educating Sonoma County communities on why and how to compost. Through this grant, during 2023, Daily Acts will host a series of educational events throughout the county; one for each of the 5 Sonoma County districts.
On March 18th, 2023, Daily Acts partnered with the Sonoma Ecology Center to host the first event of this series. The “Compost and Carbon Solutions Educational Event” was a ton of fun and participants walked away inspired and with action steps.
The program took place at the Sonoma Garden Park and fortunately, the rain took a break for the day so the program was able to be held outside at the picnic tables surrounded by the beautiful scenery. Participants were welcomed and greeted with coffee and pastries. Jonny Ehlers, the Education Project Manager at the Sonoma Ecology Center, was the featured presenter for the day. He presented and held room for organic conversation on the topic of composting, carbon sequestration, and other innovative practices that mitigate food waste while increasing soil health. Many attendees brought specific questions that pertained to their own troubles they have been encountering with their home compost bins. Jonny shared about the FBI, which are the essentials to healthy soil; Fungus, Bacteria, and Insects. Jonny was an electric and captivating presenter that truly motivated the participants. Raymond Baltar, also of the Sonoma Ecology Center, also presented talking briefly about biochar. He explained that biochar is a specialized charcoal soil amendment made from burning biomass and can be used to increase soil health and carbon sequestration capacity.
After the talk, Jonny lead an engaging tour of the park and then the program was wrapped up. Participants walked away with new counter top compost pails from Zero Waste, bokashi for their gardens, and other printed resources that will help them in their composting journeys.
