On Saturday June 10th, 2023, Daily Acts partnered with the City of Petaluma to host a Laundry-to-Landscape Graywater Installation for Petaluma residents, Brian Oh and his family. Through an application process developed and distributed by Daily Acts, Brian and his family were chosen as the installation site because of the proximity and location of his washer to the landscape, his desire to be involved in the process, and because of Brian’s proven dedication to serving the Petaluma community.
Leading up to the installation, Daily Acts teamed up with local graywater wizard and dedicated Daily Actor Mary Klein, to co-design the L2L system and determine how the laundry graywater could be routed to irrigate the front landscape.
On the morning of the event, volunteers gathered and prepared for the workshop and workday by sharing a delicious breakfast of donated Straus yogurt and Wildflour Bakery bread. Before beginning the hands-on installation process, Daily Acts staff and our collaborator Mary provided volunteers with an in-depth presentation on graywater basics, an overview of how the system will function on the site, and the pieces needed to reroute the water from the washing machine all the way through to the final plant. Volunteers finished the training program with the skills and hands-on knowledge necessary to begin planning a graywater system of their own!
Through the power of our collective efforts, we were able to successfully help Brian and his family install the full system that will irrigate dozens of plants and fruit trees while ultimately conserving 9,500-12,000 gallons of water per year!
