The Living Learnscape at the Petaluma Regional Library is designed to be a demonstration of water conservation and ecological land management practices in the urban or suburban setting. It saves around 100,000 gallons of water per year compared to the previous lawn, and cleans and infiltrates thousands of gallons of stormwater in the rain garden. The garden also grows food, habitat, and a sense of community. Over 150 volunteers helped to install the garden! The City of Petaluma provided generous support for this innovative project. The Petaluma Regional Library uses the space for classes and events. The fruit and other bounty grown here is available for public harvesting and consumption, and the paths, sculpture, and benches are for all to enjoy.
