Toyon Heteromeles arbutifolia
Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), also known as California holly or Christmas berry, is a native evergreen shrub or small tree that is prominent in the coastal and chaparral regions of California and parts of the western United States. It is well-known for its distinctive red berries, making it a notable feature in both natural landscapes and ornamental gardens. It is an evergreen shrub to small tree that usually grows to 6-8 ft. high and 4-5 ft. wide. Toyon can go to 15-20′ tall if it’s old and happy and become a delightful evergreen multi-stemmed tree with white flowers in summer and red berries in winter.
