Sunrise Park Pollinator Corridor
📍1460 Sunrise Pkwy, Petaluma, CA 94954
WELCOME TO A NEW POLLINATOR CORRIDOR NEAR THE NIGHBORHOOD GARDEN
Daily Acts collaborated with the City of Petaluma Parks and Recreation Department to transform 8,400 square feet of Sunrise Park’s lawn into a beautiful water-wise garden with 695 native and climate adaptive plants. Now when neighbors walk through this park, they will most certainly have a better chance of spotting local butterflies, bees, and birds, which we hope inspires them to make changes in their own landscape. In addition to providing critical habitat and food for local wildlife, this park will be now saving 166,470 gallons of water per year!
HISTORY OF THE GARDEN
The project area for Sunrise Park focused on converting turf to a water-wise landscape in two sections of the sidewalk mow strip at both ends of the park. See the project area image below. Daily Acts and the City of Petaluma Parks and Recreation Department want this pilot project to support best practices and maintenance strategies for future non-functional turf conversion projects.
As part of Assembly Bill 1572 which was passed in fall 2023, the City of Petaluma will be required to phase out the use of potable water on non-functional turf located at commercial, industrial and institutional properties beginning January 1st 2027. This site will model what is possible while preparing for this change.
With funding from the Department of Water Resources, Daily Acts’ has been able to successfully convert under-utilized areas of lawn in Petaluma parks and residences into water-wise gardens through the Land Resilience Partnership Program. These gardens, which previously required year-round water, are now native and climate adaptive gardens that enhance beauty, create habitat, and conserve water resources.
