Dearest Daily Actors,

As we enter the third week of our Be the Change Campaign, we are excited to announce this week’s theme for Growing a Garden: Transplanting! Meet Daily Acts’ newest team member Connor DeVane as he leads you through proper techniques for transplanting a tomato start in his how-to video.

In many ways, we have all been recently transplanted – ripped up from the roots of our normal day-to-day lives, and placed into a new reality. Some of us might be feeling transplant shock, some of us may be feeling only slightly wilted, and some of us might already be sprouting new leaves and growing back towards the sun. No matter where you are on this spectrum, there are lessons that can be learned from successful transplanting:

  1. Be as healthy as possible: Transplanting is stressful to plants. Like plants, it is important for us to take good care of ourselves to thrive in our new environment.
  2. Keeping roots is a priority: If possible, keep root structure in-tact. Wherever possible, maintain habits from “normal” life that make you happy!
  3. If roots are removed, remove top growth: With less root structure, plants can’t be as productive. Be gentle with yourself if you don’t feel as productive right now.
  4. Water with care: Recently transplanted plants need a little extra watering and attention. Make sure to grant yourself the same additional tender love and care.

As we sink our roots into this new reality, there is ample opportunity to redefine how normal can look. Let’s grow into a routine where we emphasize practicing self-care and personal leadership, growing food and medicine, conserving water and resources, and building community and civic engagement together. What will you grow in this moment?
