Brittleleaf Manzanita Arctostaphylos crustacea

This shrub is a type of Manzanita that is endemic to California where it grows in chaparral canyons, foothills, and lower-elevation mountains. This is a low-lying, spreading plant, that is generally wider than it is tall. It’s showy stems may be red or gray or both, with smooth, rough, or shreddy bark, hairless to quite bristly. It thrives in full sun to light shade and requires very little water once established.
Local pollinators, especially bumblebees love the white or pink flowers, and birds love the small, fuzzy reddish berries (called drupes).
