Canyon Prince Wild Rye Elymus condensatus

Full Sun
Low Water Use

This grass grows in bunches, has a distinctive silver blue hue, and does not die back in any season. It grows in California and northern Mexico in coastal sage scrub, chaparral and woodlands, and rarely in wetlands. This plant supports butterflies and moths.

It makes a nice drought-tolerant lawn substitute, as it can take full sun and needs little supplemental watering. It spreads by rhizomes (underground roots) but not rapidly; it can be easily contained in the area you want it to fill.
