California Fuchsia Epilobium canum
California Fuchsia, or Epilobium canum, is a species of willowherb that is native to the California foothills and coastal areas. It is a perennial with scarlet flowers that bloom in summer and autumn — it’s often the only native California plant in an area flowering at the height of summer. Hummingbirds love these flowers! It is easy to grow and will flower best in full sun. It is very drought tolerant once established, and only needs supplemental water in hotter and drier inland areas. This plant usually goes dormant in the winter, but it’s best to cut it back to the ground once the flowers are gone, which will help it come back full and healthy in the spring. This plant self-seeds and also spreads by rhizomes, so it will pop up again and again.
