On Tuesday, April 25th Daily Acts Intern Kelly Grieves, led an incredibly successful and educational workshop on natural cleaning products. The event, “Green Your Spring Clean” began with a brief presentation in order to educate attendees about common chemicals and ingredients that are found in cleaning products. As shocking as some ingredients and labels can be, it was equally as surprising to discover just how easily you can make chemical-free products of your own and have them be just as effective as store bought items. Our 5 base ingredients for this event included: borax, baking soda, castile soap, vinegar and vodka. With these ingredients we were able to make a bathroom soft scrub, disinfecting wipes, and dishwasher detergent. Participants brought their own essential oils in order to add a natural scent to their products, since many items that are labeled to have a “fragrance” contain phthalates, also known as endocrine disruptors.
Attendees received a booklet with additional recipes to continue their DIY natural products journey. This program was the first event in Daily Acts “Healthy Homes, Happy Hearts” Homegrown Series, where we are working to educate and empower folks to make products of their own in order to live a healthier and more environmentally aware lifestyle.
