“Having Daily Acts doing what we dream we could do is letting us know we’re not in this alone”.

A Letter from Our Executive Director

Happy Fall Daily Actors,

As the seasons pull in, fall is a time to rest, reflect, and reconnect. Especially as we navigate more climate disruption, division and difficulty.

It’s vital to both celebrate the good and what is working and honor and accept the challenges. Both of these things grow us whole as we deepen and renew our commitment to the more healthy, just, resilient world being born. This renewal happens through our actions, and through acting together, as we embody our vision and values.

AND there is a lot to celebrate! With amazing partner organizations, businesses, agencies and hundreds of inspired volunteers, Daily Acts has created a TON of transformations in the last year through the Land Resilience Partnership.

With so much hurt and upheaval, spreading Daily Acts’ inspiring, empowering message, models and resources is more critical than ever. In this newsletter are updates on the Land Resilience Partnership and our Climate Resilient Schools Program, two of the numerous ways Daily Acts is spreading vision, hope and models of tangible transformation. Soak in and celebrate the good to grow more of it!

Fall is also when we call on you to nourish our work with your financial support. We literally can’t do this without you.

Twenty-three years ago, this fall, Daily Acts was born out of heartbreak and loss. Time and time again, we have shown that immense good can come from hurt, when we take heart and take action together.

Thank you for being a vital part of Daily Acts. It is an honor to do this work with you and to continue to spread it to more hearts, hands and communities.

With love and gratitude,

Trathen Heckman
Founder & Executive Director of Daily Acts

Celebrating One Year of the Land Resilience Partnership

Since we launched the Land Resilience Partnership (LRP) last fall, our Programs Team have been busy bees installing beautiful water-wise landscape projects at 29 schools, parks and residences.

These projects include the installation of 17 greywater and rainwater reuse systems, 9 rain gardens and transforming nearly a football field’s worth of lawn, saving 1.6 million gallons of water this year and every year, now and forever!

These technical and labor-intensive installations were made possible by collaborations with Sonoma RCD, The Water Folk, Conservation Corps North Bay (CCNB), Permaculture Artisans, Petaluma People Services Center (PPSC), Rebuilding Together Petaluma and ReLeaf Petaluma.

In addition to our program partners, nearly 300 volunteers, including many youth from the schools, corporate volunteers and more, joined us for community planting days to get thousands of new water-wise and native plants into the ground.

There are many benefits to these projects, including saving water, increasing habitat, reducing urban heat with shade trees, recharging groundwater, and increasing the soil’s ability to sequester carbon.

Just as important, these projects demonstrate that change doesn’t have to be scary. These transformations bring our community together, educate young adults with green job skills, beautify our shared spaces, and show our children and the greater public that change is possible.

How Daily Acts is Scaling Change in Petaluma and Beyond through the Land Resilience Partnership

SPREADING LOCAL SOLUTIONS

We are installing 60 landscape projects in Petaluma with free designs and labor for installations, and low or no cost for materials, making these solutions more accessible than ever. Working with Conservation Corps North Bay, free labor is provided through paid green job skill development where young adult Corpsmembers receive classroom and hands-on training.

CATALYZING COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

Relationships are at the core of our work. Everything we do is in partnership because we recognize it takes a village to do this work well. Through the Land Resilience Partnership, we’re collaborating with more than a dozen other entities including nonprofits, resource conservation districts, schools, municipalities, and state agencies to make our projects successful.

PARTNERING WITH GOVERNMENT

We are mobilizing government funding to spread hands-on, nature-based solutions to climate change while advocating for equitable access to these solutions. By taking action together, we are shaping the needed programs and policies to create more equitable, climate resilient landscapes and communities.

SCALING ACROSS CALIFORNIA

The Land Resilience Partnership has active programs in four counties across California, with interest to implement in one third of the state’s counties! Imagine other cities scaling Daily Acts’ approach of on-the-ground solutions, community collaboration and effective government partnerships to affect widespread change.

Four Schools to Receive Climate Resilient Gardens

This year, Daily Acts launched the Climate Resilient Schools program to install water conservation projects at four schools!
Two beautiful landscape transformations have been completed so far at Miwok Valley Charter School and La Tercera Elementary School.

Check out the unique garden concept for La Tercera Elementary School below, which also included the installation of rain tanks and a rain garden! 60+ volunteers and 250+ students joined us over two workdays this month to plant 800 water-wise and native plants.
