On June 15, 2024, the heart of the Roseland community in Santa Rosa buzzed with excitement as Daily Acts partnered with Bayer Farm to host the “Water-wise Insect Investigation” event. This bilingual program, presented in both English and Spanish, was designed to engage kids and families in the wonders of water-wise gardening and the importance of biodiversity.

The event saw a turnout of about 20 enthusiastic participants, including parents, children, and community members. Kandis Gilmore, a biologist, entomologist, and conservationist, led the day’s activities. She initiated the event with an engaging discussion on the significance of water-wise gardening for creating biodiverse landscapes that support vital habitats for insects and other critters.

Kandis demonstrated how to safely catch insects and place them in containers with magnifying glasses for better observation. Armed with this knowledge, participants eagerly ventured into the garden equipped with nets and other tools. They caught native butterflies, bees, beetles, and various other insects. When someone found an interesting specimen, they would bring it to Kandis, who provided fascinating insights about the species before releasing them back into their natural habitat.

A Spanish-speaking translator was present to ensure that all attendees could fully participate and understand the activities. The sight of children and adults alike exploring and learning about their environment was truly heartwarming.

The event, made possible through the support of the City of Santa Rosa, was a resounding success. It offered a wonderful opportunity for community members to connect with nature, learn about the importance of biodiversity, and practice water-wise gardening. Participants left with a greater appreciation for their environment and the skills to continue exploring and conserving it.
